Vern Pierson

District Attorney at EL DORADO COUNTY

In June, 2006, Vern was elected as District Attorney of El Dorado County and is currently serving his third term.

While attending law school, Vern worked in the Orange County District Attorney’s Office – graduating near the top of his class, with honors. After law school, Vern worked at the Amador County District Attorney’s Office, where he prosecuted hundreds of cases, including violent and sophisticated career criminals and sex offenders. Learning a teacher charged with child molest was seeking to retain his teaching credentials, Vern wrote the statute which forever barred convicted sex offenders from working in our classrooms.

Vern’s success as a prosecutor and his interest in the legislative process led him to work as a criminal justice advocate, and later as an instructor, with the California District Attorneys Association. In 1996, Vern joined the California Department of Justice as a Deputy Attorney General and in September of 2000, he returned to Amador County as the Chief Assistant District Attorney. While serving as the elected District Attorney, Vern continues to handle cases, including the successful death-penalty prosecution of a defendant who took the life of CHP Officer Scott Russell, and the prosecution of sexual predators Phillip and Nancy Garrido who had kidnapped 11 year old Jaycee Dugard and imprisoned her for 18 years.

Within weeks of graduation from high school in 1982, Vern enlisted in the Army – serving in the infantry’s 101st Airborne, graduating from the Army’s Airborne and Air Assault schools, and was the recipient of the Army Commendation and Army Achievement Medals. Vern also served in the 1st of the 18th Cav. Long Range Surveillance Detachment.

Vern currently lives in El Dorado Hills with his wife Cyndee, and has raised three children here – two who are currently in the Army following in their father’s path of service to our country.
